SKIN AND BONES

Music with a strong 'Country' feel. Lazy old fashioned summers, nostalgia and fun.

Last Great Cowboy
performed and composed by John Bell

He was sitting at the bar
with a can of Lone Star beer
As he told me of a spread he lost
his eyes were filled with tears
So I rustled up my guitar
and I asked what I should play
He said sing a song about the last great cowboys
now all gone away.

So then I began to pick a lick
and everybody joined in
It was about the last great cowboy
I wrote this song for him.

Well, he got right up
and clapped his hands
And we all began to dance
And we swore and cussed and made a fuss
And Jethro lost his pants
So I kept on playing my guitar
And I knew what I should I play
So I sang a song about the last great cowboys
Now all gone away

(lead)

So I began to pick a lick
and everybody joined in
So I sang about the last great cowboy
And I wrote this song for him.
So I sang about the last great cowboy
And I wrote this song for him.

Tears Like Rain
performed and composed by John Bell

As you watch the raindrops fall
tiny mirrors of your eyes
Endless life and death are we
born only just to die

Timeless rhythm whispering voices
call to you wait for you
Plunging through a darkened sky their
fate unknown all alone

And your heart it cries with the rain
Would you like to start all over again?
Yes, we'll rise from the earth my friend
Not knowing where we've been - like the rain.

Like a thousand gems of crystal
each drop glistens as if falls
Man's countless tears shed a million years.
Does anyone hear at all?

Timeless rhythm whispering voices
call to you wait for you
Plunging through a darkened sky their
fate unknown all alone

And your heart it cries with the rain
Would you like to start all over again?
Yes, we'll rise from the earth my friend
Not knowing where we've been
Not knowing where we've been
Not knowing where we've been - like the rain.

Falling, falling, falling
Falling, falling, falling
Falling,
Falling, falling, falling falling...

Gramma's Country Song
performed and composed by John Bell
for Grandma Mary Hyde

Well I wasn't born in the country
I was born in Califor-ni-a
But my grandma was born in Missouri
Yea said listen to your grandson play

I can't forget the country
It's still running in my blood.
Deeper than you could ever know
well the country makes me run.

Well I'm going back to country
I said Lord make the boy to sing
Well, my gramma was born in the country
an' listen to your grandson sing

Way back in Missouri
you can hear the farmer plow,
well all day long in the burning sun
he's a singing that country song

Well you know my gramma came Missouri,
well there's country blood in my soul
So I'm playing this song for you grandma
an' let that country blood boil

Well I wasn't born in the country
I was born in Califor-ni-a
Gramma get up and dance to a song
and listen to your grandson play
an sing a song about country

Country music
it's goin down
it's goin down
it's goin down down down down down down

I said I wasn't born in the country
I was born in Califor-ni-a
I said Gramma, Gramma, Gramma
won't ya get up and dance
and listen to your grandson play

Get on...
Get on...
Get on...
Get on...

Wahoo!!
(do do do)

I wasn't born in the country
I was born in Califor-ni-a
I said Gramma Gramma
Listen to your baby play...

Starship Submarine
composed by John Bell, performed by John Bell
and Noelle (Hoyt) Sladon

Last night I was a captain of a silver starship
Just cruising along on a laser beam
Like a ball of fire I plunged into the ocean
And in a splash was a crystal submarine

Twinkling sunbeams filter down
Smiling mermaids all around
Without a care in an ocean made of dreams
Tiny seashell armies made of bright translucent marmalade
I'm the captain of the Starship Submarine

Like a ball of fire I plunged on to that surface
Like a streak of light I sped into the sky
Before me lay the endless star-filled universe
At the speed of light I vanished with a sigh

Twinkling sunbeams filter down
Smiling mermaids all around
Without a care in an ocean made of dreams
Tiny seashell armies made of bright translucent marmalade
I'm the captain of the Starship Submarine

I'm the captain of the silver starship
I'm the captain of the silver starship

I'm the captain of a silver starship submarine
I'm the captain of a silver starship submarine
And I'm flying through the sky
And I'm flying through the sky

Did you see me go by?
Did you see me go by?
At the speed of light
At the speed of light

I'm the captain of a silver starship
I'm the captain of a silver starship (fade)

No Matter How Many Times
performed and composed by John Bell

Well I heard you in the morning
you were calling out my name
and you told me of a distant place
where nothing feels the same

And the light beyond all knowing
pulls you higher than all high
I will never listen to you
never listen to you

No matter
how many times you call me
how many times you call me
how many times you call me
no no
how many times you call me
I'll be gone
I'll be gone

And I said do not come near me
though your voice is soft and fair
for you hurt me down to my heart
and you only bring despair

so you flee on to the others
and you find your comforts there
I shall never listen to you
never listen to you

No matter
how many times you call me
how many times you call me
no no
how many times you call me
how many times you call me
no no
how many times you call me
how many times you call me
how many times you call me
how many times you call me
I'll never never never never
listen to you

I am through
I am through
I no no no no no
I am through
no no no no no

No matter
how many times you call me
No matter
how many times you call me
No matter
how many times you call me
(I won't be around) No matter
how many times you call me
(I won't be around) No matter
how many times you call me
(I won't be around) No matter
how many times you call me

I'm not to be found
I'm not to be found
I'm not to be found
I'm underground
yes I'm underground
I 'm underground
and I'm not to be found
and I won't be around
for you
no no no no
not for you

Silly Love Song
performed and composed by John Bell

Just sitting here
and I'm drunk and lonely
I can only think of you
Well I'm sittin' here
and I'm a sinking
'cos I been drinkin' this whole night through

Well there ain't a girl
in this whole wide world
That can thrill me like you do.
And when you kiss my lips
it thrills me to my fingertips
And makes me go crazy through and through

So will you listen to my silly love song
It's a silly love song that I wrote for you

Well there ain't a girl
in this whole wide world
That can thrill me like you do.
And when you kiss my lips
it thrills me to my fingertips
And makes me go crazy through and through

So will you listen to my love song
It's a love song that I wrote for you
Oh will you listen to my silly love song
It's a silly love song saying I love you.

Ol' Country Summer
composed by John Bell, performed by John Bell
and Noelle (Hoyt) Sladon

Yeehah!

Me and Jethro laying down
passed on the porch
Sun was raising in the sky
it surely was scorch
Jethro tried to get up sudden
and he fell right on his ear
Serves him right for drinking all of
cousin Kevin's beer

It's a good ole' country summer
makes you feel like lazin' round
When it's dark we'll pile into the Buick
We'll raise some hell and we'll terrorize the town

Uncle Jack is kicking back
flies circle round his head
Fester's lying open mouthed
and it looks like he was dead
Martha went out to fetch a melon
and Sally's in the barn
Messin' round with ole Judge Parker
but he won't do her no harm

It's a good ole' country summer
makes you feel like lazin' round
When it's dark we'll pile into the Buick
We'll raise some hell and we'll terrorize the town

Yeehah!!
(kazoo solo)

It's a good ole' country summer
makes you feel like lazin' round
When it's dark we'll pile into the Buick
We'll raise some hell and we'll terrorize the town
We'll raise some hell and we'll terrorize the town
We'll raise some hell and we'll terrorize the town

Virginia Dream
performed and composed by John Bell

Well I cannot take the city -
don't you know it's killing me
All the neon signs and the subway lines
will be the death of me

Will you take me back to Virginia?
I just can't stand it anymore.
Well I'm always beneath someone's else's tree
My ceiling is someone's floor

Well the air is so thick I can't breathe
And the highways they wind like snakes
And the only water I can even drink
Is the kind that they make

Won't you take me back to Virginia?
Where the meadows are pure and clean
Sometimes late at night I dream of you
Oh Virginia Dream

Just give me an acre of ground
And a tiny plow away
And we'll grow corn and be happy in the morn
And watch all the children play.

How I long to go back to Virginia
Where the clover is ever so green
In my mind in the night in my case white room
I have - yes I have a Virginia dream.

Ooooh, a Virgina dream
sweet Virginia dream

When I Was Young
performed and composed by John Bell

I opened up my weary eyes
all full of dreams of days gone by
Of people that I knew
and things we used to do
when I was young

But now it seems that they've all changed
They've lost their dreams only I remain
I see life as a child
or so they said
the friends I left behind

Sitting in my garden
watching flowers, watching flowers by the hour,
And all I see is still a mystery
as my eyes fill with tears as I look on
as I look on

Goodbye Alan, David and Paul
Good luck Roberta and her raggedy doll
Bryan and Martha, Chris and Eileen
who will never know what lies inbetween
Here and Now
Here and Now

Goodbye goodbye goodbye goodbye
Goodbye goodbye goodbye goodbye

Goodbye...

Flow Down the River
performed and composed by John Bell

(see also the new recording)

Patterns of sunbeams dance on a flower
Misty grey mountains my life's but an hour
Swirling blue waters somehow they know
Like a leaf flowing by I drift and I flow
Like a leaf flowing by I drift and I flow

Lazy old river tells it's secrets to me
Whispers of places that I'd like to be
Tells of a journey from mountains to seas
Where it loses itself and is finally free
Where it loses itself and is finally free...

I will flow down the river
I will flow down the river
Flowing on and on and on
Flowing on and on and on
I will flow down the river
I will flow...

Gypsy Voyage (incomplete)
performed and composed by John Bell

Listen as we drift right into space
Lonely gypsies leave the human race
Moonbeams carry us high to the stars
Sunbeams faster than light we are

Leave behind the boundaries of your mind
Gentle crystal universes find
Light beams painting a portrait in time
Sweet dreams leaving all memories behind
